Occupy West Los Angeles

Occupy West Los Angeles is an expansion of the Occupy Movement that focuses on national issues that affect us in our own local communities. OWLA strongly encourages other community leaders and citizens to start their own Occupy Communities where unemployment, homelessness, declining wages, lack of health care, and polluted land, lakes and beaches have hurt us deeply and which continue to affect us all.

Occupy The Hood said it best when they observed, “even though many of the hardest-hit communities are communities of color, this is not exclusively a problem limited by race or ethnicity. Corporate power has long since crossed ‘the color line’ in the destructiveness of its social, economic and political practices.”

Occupy West Los Angeles stands by the basic principles of the Occupy Movement’s “Principles of Solidarity”:

· Engaging in direct and transparent participatory democracy

· Empowering one another against all forms of oppression

· Redefining how labor is valued

· The sanctity of individual privacy

· The belief that education is a human right

Furthermore, we stand with the right to occupy space safely proposed by the Queer Affinity Group - Los Angeles, and unanimously approved, which states:

. . . for women and LGBTQ people to participate equally in the Occupy movement, we must be safe in occupied spaces. We know that harassment and assault happens everywhere -- and that the Occupy movement is no more immune to it than our nation’s parks and parking lots -- but we also know that a movement where women and LGBTQ individuals are not safe is not a movement that serves the interests of the 99%.

Occupy West Los Angeles believes in equality for all people, building community relations, and sharing information that empowers us as individuals and as a community. Furthermore, it is our desire to reduce and prevent further exploitation and tyranny from corruption-driven attacks on our personal resources and retirement funds. We support mass disinvestment from any and all corrupt corporations, banks and investment schemes that contribute, exploit and steal from the 99%.

We stand in solidarity and support against police brutality currently targeted against non-violent Occupation Movement protesters who continue to challenge the status-quo.

Lastly, we aim to educate and share information that will reverse government policies that are a direct attack on an American citizen’s First Amendment right, the right of Freedom of Speech.
